21. The Brady Bunch
One night in 1969 when my parents went out, they asked our neighbor Mrs. Weisel to look after us.
I remember feeling a bit homesick. I don’t know what my brother and sister were up to, but I was a bit at loose ends, and wondering when my parents would be back. Then Mrs. Weisel said these 8 words that would change my life:
“Do you want to watch the Brady Bunch?”
I had no idea what she was talking about, but she explained that her girls loved to watch the Brady Bunch every Friday night at 8.
Our family was not that big on TV. We did have a TV of course. It was small and portable with big antennas. I remember it mostly being on either the coffee table or in my parent’s bedroom.
If one or two people were watching, that was usually in the living room, but if all 5 of us were watching, that usually meant we were all piled in my parent’s bed.
Wow, I fell in love! Every Friday night from then on, we would pile on the bed and watch the Brady Bunch. I was so excited when it would come on. I’d waited a whole week for this moment! Mike was definitely my favorite. But each one had a place in my heart.
What was it about those Brady’s I loved so much?
I think it’s because no one really got in trouble. It was a world where things went wrong, but everyone worked together to figure it out. Always in the most amazing and unexpected way. Supporting each other through thick and thin.
