15. That Woman in the Movie Theater
Somewhere ‘round about 1989 Greg and I went to a movie at the Rotunda Theater. I have no idea what the movie was, but I do remember one very striking thing.
We got there early and found our perfect seats. That was not the striking thing because we were major creatures of habit when it came to movies, and knew just where to sit.
I put my feet up on the seat next to me. That was not the striking thing because I’ve always loved having my feet up at knee level (maybe I just have bad circulation?)
The lights went down and the movie started. Definitely not the striking thing.
The theater filled up, and someone sat right on my designated foot-chair. That was not the striking thing, because movies back then often sold out and foot-chairs were almost always relinquished.
The woman sitting in my foot-chair turned to me as I was hurriedly removing my feet and whispered so calmly “Oh, you can leave your feet there if you want.”
That was the striking thing!
Who does that? I would never let anyone have an inch of my movie chair. I would fight for what is rightly mine like I would fight for the last cookie in the bag. You have to fight for what is yours. Right? Defend your territory? Make sure everything is fair?
Don’t you?
I thought you did, until I met that woman in the movie theater.
